Clontarf Football Club, Dublin 3

SPORT & LEISURE

Client: Clontarf Rugby Club

Works: The new, state-of-the-art 3G rugby pitch at Clontarf Football Club was officially unveiled in November 2015.

The pitch is made from the most up to date technologies and conforms to 2015 World Rugby playing surface standards. It replaces the previous grass pitch which suffered heavily during the winter months from poor drainage and over use. There are also training pods which runs alongside the pitch which allows for additional training to take place.

The design and construction of all-weather pitches does not immediately stand out as an architectural project however when such a project is considered in terms of planning, tendering, detailing, project management and supervision of construction, it soon becomes apparent to clients that a full design team is vital to deliver such an important piece of infrastructure.

As a player, coach and spectator Rory Ryan’s rugby knowledge, together with his architectural design and project management skills, was a key part of developing a design that met a variety of club needs. The specification of ‘carpet’ and ‘shock-pad’ is the same as the Leinster Rugby installation at Donnybrook in 2014.
